Making Poses in Blender

Okay, so people keep asking me “How do you make poses?” and I give them a link to the best tutorial I’ve found, but it seems it’s missing some important details. So I’m going to tell you every step of the way how to create custom poses for The Sims 3. I use Blender because Blender is free and easy and doesn't hate me.

What this tutorial will NOT teach you:
-How to update poses for the pose list.
-How to install pose player/mods folder.

What you will need:
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] I [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] I [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] I [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] I [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] I [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Step 1: Installation
Install all of the above. Install Blender & S3PE according to the instructions. Extract the Base Poses, and Rig files and save them in a folder placed somewhere easily found. Place the io_s3py_animation.zip in the same place. DO NOT UNZIP the s3py animation. Place the zip into the folder. [I placed mine on my desktop and named it Stuff for Poses, you can separate them into different folders]

To install plug-in:
Open Blender

Go to File>User Preferences>Add-Ons>Install Addon and go to the location of the io_s3py_animation.zip and click “Install Addon”. Search for the zip in the search bar and check the little box to the right and close the window.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

User Preferences:
Next, go to File>Open and open the afRig.blend file.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

You should get something that looks like this.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Next, hold Ctrl + U and a small window will pop up. Select “Save User Settings”. Now every time you open Blender, your rig will already be open. [If you want to make poses for a male, child, toddler, horse, etc. you will have to open the rig the same way you did the afRig.blend, but you do not have to save it]

Close Blender.

Step 2: Preparation
Open S3PE.

Click File>Open and choose the base for the pose you are making. Right click and go to Export and rename [at the very bottom, past Import and Export]. Name the pose whatever you like [be sure to start the pose with the whatever the base starts with. a=teen-elder, c=child, p=toddler, etc. [Example: a_posename_nameofcreator01]

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Close S3PE.

Step 3: Creating your pose
Open Blender.

Go to File>Import>Sims 3 Animation and open the animation file you just made.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Pose your rig. Right-Click the different joints to move them.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

R-Rotate
RR-Flip
G-Grab
Mouse scroll bar - zoom
Shift+Mouse scroll bar-Move Up/Down
Ctrl+Scroll Bar - Move Left/Right [Mvande]
[You can click the mouse scroll bar and drag to rotate your camera view]

When your pose is finished, click A and make sure all the joints are highlighted. Click ‘I’ and select LocRot. This locks your pose.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Go to File>Export>Sims 3 Animation and type in the name of your pose [SAME name as what you put in S3PE].

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

It will take you back to where you imported the animation, double click the original animation to save over it and close Blender. There should be two animations in your poses folder now. [One is a backup. This is NOT the pose]

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Step 4: Packaging your animation
Open S3PE and your Pose folder [the folder you saved your animation in].

Drag the animation from your working folder to the S3PE window. Click ‘OK’ in the window that pops up. [DO NOT DRAG THE BACKUP FILE]

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

You should have one file open in S3PE. This is the pose you just made. Right click on the file and select Export>To Package.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Save the package in your mods folder where the rest of your poses are located. [Name the package the same as you named it when you first made the animation]

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Now, close S3PE and the pose folder. Start up your game and you can now test your pose [assuming you saved it in your Mods folder]. Click on the pose player and select “Pose by Name”. Type in the name of the pose you are testing. [Example: Type a_posename_nameofcreator01] You must type in the exact name of the pose. If it doesn’t work the first time, try retyping it.

My pose.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Now, check out your pose and if everything is the way you want it to be take a screenshot [Press C] for the image you want to use for the pose list. I always place the sim on a white or black background because it’s easier to see the pose IMO, but you can build a set if you’d like. Whatever you prefer.

Now you can close your game and get your poses ready to update to a pose list. I will make another tutorial soon explaining this.

IF your pose didn’t turn out the way you were hoping it would, go to your mods folder and delete the package. Open Blender and import the animation file [not the backup]. You can then edit your pose however you like and follow the steps again starting with creating your pose. If you think your pose is unfixable, replace your animation with the backup [rename the backup and erase everything after CLIP and replace]. Just open that in Blender and you can start over.

Feel free to post any questions here. If you’re getting any errors or something you don’t understand please post a screenshot or a question.

Hey Pepper,

So I can't get the add-on to install. Here is what I did..

User Prefrences>Add-ons>Install Add-on> Then I found the io_s3py thing. After that I clicked install add-on. The first time I did it, it led me to the page that had just that on it, but it wouldn't let me click on it.

That time I didn't think it would be a big deal, so I did the rest of the steps, but than I had to stop where it said "Export it as..." because obviously I didn't have the add-on installed correctly.

I went back and tried again, I did all of the steps I needed to do to install an add-on, but this time instead of leading me to a screen where it had just the spy thing. It just took me back to a list of all of the add-ons.

I hope this makes sense, I will keep messing with it, but any help is apprecited. :D

Thanks,
MV

Edit: Wait..I figured it out. You know of course I would figure it out after I post a question. SMH

AHH!!!

Hey Pepper,

This time I do have a problem. Sad:

So I made my first pose la-di-da. Saved it, tried to get it to work in game and it didn't. I typed in the name several times..nothing. I shrugged it off and made a second pose la-di-da. Again, it wouldn't open in game! I tried numerous times, different families, and different sims.

I also took out almost all of my poses from my game to see if I just had to many in there and nothing. Sad

Any ideas on what I did wrong?

Hmm...did you make sure that all the joints were highlighted when you locked and exported your pose?

Hmm...

Did you Import the animation file before you started the pose?

Also, make sure you made the correct file into a package and not the backup file.

Yes, I did import the animation file and yes I made sure I packaged the correct one.

I re-exported it and I'm seeing if it will work this time. :)

I'm not really sure what else it could be, unless the name is being typed wrong or it the package was saved somewhere other than your mods folder.

I still get some blank poses every once in a while. Usually I just forget to put it in my mods folder or package the wrong file.

* Double Checks*

It is in my mods folder and I'm positive I typed the name right.

I will just go make a very simple pose and I will double check that I did everything right. If that one doesn't working I will give up for the day..I think.

Okay. When you test the pose, does your model stand like a starfish [like the model when you first open Blender] or does she just stand there frozen?

Frozen, but I think I figured out what I did wrong.

When I exported the file I chose export>to file. Not export and rename.

The two poses I already made weren't that important so I will just "trash" them and see if it will work this time.

I knew this was going to be a user error, lol.

Also I guess just a pointer now is to put in something that says "Make sure to choose export and rename!".

Oh and thanks for the tut. Smile: Without it I would be no where near where I am to making a pose. ;-)

Lol. Yeah. I had the same problem from another person that did that. They kept exporting to package. So I added a screenshot and [skip import and export options and choose export and rename]. Sorry for not being more clear there.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

However after getting it in game I don't like it that much, so I will re-do it. Also ctrl+mouse scroll will make the screen go from right to left. Just FYI. :D

Lol. I don't mind. Usually if they go starfish, that means you either didn't lock the pose or you used the backup file. I would just reopen the animation in Blender and start at locking and then Export.

Hey Pepper!

So I thought today I would start learning to make poses :) Everything works until I start to pose the rig. When I do that, if I move a joint the limb becomes stretched out and emaciated. Like if I move the knee joint, it makes the leg all long and thin and really weird/not normal. Ummm is that supposed to happen?

Thanks!!

Are you using 'G' to move them? If you use G then yeah it will do that. I usually only use G when I'm doing the face and then I only move things a little bit. Usually you'll want to use R which will rotate left or right or RR which will rotate in every direction.

To move up and down, hold shift and use the scroll bar [the arrow keys may work, I'm not sure I haven't tried]. To move left or right hold Ctrl and use the scroll bar.
